As expected, Marcos came through for the team in his first match of Cyprus’ Davis Cup tie against Egypt on Friday. Marcos gave Cyprus another victory and on Saturday, he will team up with Photos Kallias and try to give the national team a 2-1 lead.
Marcos, although forced by his opponent to move around the court a lot, easily won the match in three straight sets. The first set 6-2 in 26 minutes, the second also 6-2 in 30 minutes and the third set 6-1 in 23 minutes.
Marcos’ victory levelled the tie for Cyprus, after Rares Cuzdriorean had earlier lost to Karim Maamoun in straight sets.
Next up on Saturday will be the key doubles match 16:00 local time. Marcos Baghdatis and Kallias will face Karim Maamoun and Sherif Sabry.

• Marcos was chief cheerleader for Cuzdriorean during his match. Marcos was watching the whole match courtside and every now and then was standing up, clapping, encouraging and talking to his teammate.
• Two of the players from Marcos’ favourite football team, APOLLON, were watching Marcos’ match. Gaston Sagoi and Christis Theofilou were at ‘Spyros Kyprianoyu’ with their families, cheering the Cypriot tennis player.
• The attendance at Marcos’ match was significantly increased. The crowds offered Marcos great support.
