Marcos is through to the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open after a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 second-round win over Juan Ignacio Chela on Saturday at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Miami.
Three breaks of serve aided Marcos to a 6-2 first set and he capitalised on his momentum by breaking serve in the first game of the second set. More strong play from Marcos saw him earn his first match points in the ninth game, courtesy of two forehand errors from Chela, but he was unable to convert either.
Marcos made no mistake on serve in the following game, though, earning his third match point as Chela netted. A blistering backhand winner up the line then closed out victory for Marcos after 82 minutes.
In a dominant display by Marcos, he struck 27 winners to just 12 from his Argentine opponent and converted four of the eight break points he created in the pair’s fourth meeting.
Next up for Marcos will be a clash with either seventh-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic or Frenchman Stephane Robert for a place in the fourth round.
