Italian qualifier Flavio Cipolla prematurely ended Marcos’ Serbia Open campaign with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory when the match resumed on Wednesday morning in Belgrade.
Play had been suspended due to darkness on Tuesday evening, with Cipolla having just levelled the match at one-set all. The Italian came out in brighter conditions on Wednesday to break serve three times in the final set and seal victory after two hours and five minutes of total play.
In a fairly even match, both players struggled on serve in the encounter; Cipolla faced 18 break points and saved 14, while Marcos was broken five times from 20 opportunities.
Marcos’ clay-court season has not started quite as he would have liked, but he will have the chance for more match practice ahead of Roland Garros when he attends the Zagreb Open – an ATP Challenger Tour event - next week.
