Marcos recorded his 17th win over a Top 10 player on Wednesday evening as he ousted World No. 5 Andy Murray 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

Hot off a run to the Australian Open final, Murray started the match well and raced to a double break 3-0 lead in the first set. Asked later if he thought the set was over at this stage, Marcos assured the on-court interviewer he always believed he could fight back and did just that as he capitalised on a spate of errors from Murray to level at 4-4.

With Marcos settling into his game, and mastering the fast conditions the better of the two players, he then clinched the first set with a third break of Murray’s serve in the 10th game as the Scot netted a forehand.

Marcos continued to raise his level in the second set and a driven backhand winner sealed a break of Murray’s serve to love in the fourth game. He then reeled off the final three games to seal victory in just over an hour.

"I always try to fight and find a solution to win, Andy played good at the start, I had to break the rhythm, he began making mistakes and lost concentration," said Marcos. "I finished it off and I'm very happy. He could be tired from Melbourne, when I played the final in Australia, I was in bed for a week, it's tough to come back. I took my chances today, bad luck for him."

For a place in the quarter-finals, Marcos will face Spanish left-hander Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-4 earlier in the day. The match is scheduled to take place third on Centre Court on Thursday, with play for the day beginning at 11am local time (12pm Cyprus, 10am GMT, 5am ET). Check out the full order of play here.
