The Davis Cup third-round match between Finland and Cyprus is finely poised at 1-1 after the first day’s play in Salohalli, Finland.
Finnish No. 1 Jarkko Nieminen got the host nation off to a strong start as he defeated Cyprus’ Photos Kallias 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 to open up an early 1-0 lead.
Marcos was quick to hit back for Cyprus though, easily dispatching of Henri Kontinen 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to level the tie at one-rubber all.
It was a landmark victory for Marcos as it marked his 50th Davis Cup win – quite an achievement for a 24 year old. He has lost just 12 matches in total, and only three in singles (35-3 record) – making him Cyprus’ most successful Davis Cup player ever.
Marcos and Kallias will now team together for a must-win doubles match, when they will face Kontinen and Nieminen for Finland. That rubber takes place at 2:00 p.m. local time on Saturday.
The winning nation this weekend will gain promotion to Europe/Africa Zone I, just one level down from the elite World Group.
Go Cyprus!
