Marcos was unflappable in his opener at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship on Tuesday, turning in a ruthless 6-0, 6-0 performance over Diego Schwartzman.
It marked the first double bagel of Marcos' career and the first on the ATP World Tour in nearly one year. The last time a player won a match without losing a game in Houston was 30 years ago.
In what was their first meeting, Marcos needed just 49 minutes to dispatch his Argentine opponent, firing four aces, finishing with a perfect 12/12 first serve points won and converting six of 12 break points. His 2016 clay-court debut was without flaws. He broke in the second, fourth and sixth games of both the first and second sets, while not facing a break point himself.
Marcos will next face either 2014 champion Fernando Verdasco or another Argentine, Carlos Berlocq, in the second round. Seeded eighth this week, he is making his third appearance at River Oaks Country Club.
