Marcos Breezes Past Becker

Tuesday, 17 January, 2012

In hot and windy conditions on Monday in Melbourne, Marcos advanced to the second round of the Australian Open with a 6-1, 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Germany’s Benjamin Becker.

A very strong serving display saw Marcos fire 18 aces and win 92 per cent of points behind his first serve. He broke the No. 304-ranked Becker six times from eight opportunities as he clinched victory in one hour and 49 minutes, to the delight of his supporters on Show Court 2 at Melbourne Park.

Marcos goes onto face Swiss No. 21 seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who defeated Benoit Paire in straight sets. World No. 22 Wawrinka won their one previous meeting, four years ago in Indian Wells. The match will be scheduled for Wednesday in Melbourne.
