Marcos was beaten in his opening second-round match at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Thursday in Bucharest, falling to Italy’s Fabio Fognini 7-5, 7-6(4).
Marcos led by a service break in both sets, but was unable to capitalise. He led 3-0 in the second set tie-break, but Fognini reeled off seven of the next eight points to claim victory in just under two hours.
It was Marcos’ first clay-court tournament of the season, and he continues his campaign at next week’s BMW Open in Munich. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Nicolas Almagro and Feliciano Lopez also feature at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament, where Marcos reached the semi-finals in 2007 and 2010.
