All Eyes On Rome As Marcos Falls In Madrid Opener

Tuesday, 03 May, 2016

Marcos will turn his attention to the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Rome after falling in his first-round match at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Marcos dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 decision to 16th seed Gilles Simon on Monday. He fired eight aces on the clay of the Spanish capital, saving four of seven break points in defeat. The match lasted two hours and 25 minutes.

It was Marcos' first loss to Simon since 2012. Their head-to-head series is now tied at three wins apiece. Marcos did well to fight back after dropping the first set, breaking twice late in the second to force a decider. But a break to Simon in the third game of the third set would be all the Frenchman needed to seal the victory.

Marcos will be back in action next week at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, where he is poised to make his seventh appearance.
